IMPROVING THE UPTAKE OF FIRE SAFETY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS – THE VERIFIERS PERSPECTIVE

The choice of whether to adopt performance-based design to satisfy national building codes or regulations is now readily available in many countries. Societal expectations and widely differing geographical considerations guarantee that the technical content of regulatory requirements vary considerably; however, commonly experienced problems associated with the implementation of performance-based design (PBD) have been recognised. Examining the verifiers’ perspective, further understanding of the problems associated with the PBD process may be obtained, assisting stakeholders to identify and relate to commonly encountered potentially problematic areas. Awareness of recognised difficulties permits their avoidance in many cases through the development of alternative stratagems; practitioners being more ably equipped to identify and adopt appropriate resolutions are more likely to experience more favourable outcomes in relation to the process of performance-based design.
