Reasonable outdoor airflow rate is important for indoor air quality and energy conservation and its determination depends on effectiveness of indoor air quality improvement with outdoor air at a great degree. A model, used for assessing effectiveness of indoor air quality improvement with outdoor air, was given based on relationship among indoor air pollution source, outdoor airflow rate and indoor air quality. For air pollution caused by building material total volatile organic compounds emission, effectiveness of indoor air quality improvement with outdoor air was analyzed. Impact of outdoor airflow rate on indoor air chemical reaction was discussed. The results show that low outdoor airflow rate may be only suitable for high occupants density building spaces, in order to control indoor air pollution caused by building material. Moreover, the condition, low pollution building, affects determination of reasonable outdoor airflow rate. In addition, high-efficiency ventilation type is necessary for weakening influence of outdoor airflow rate on indoor air chemical reaction.
