Natural ventilation is served as an effective passive cooling design strategy to reduce energy used by air condition systems, at the same time it can contribute significant part to achieving satisfying indoor air environment. Natural ventilation in design of modern architecture affects directly the indoor thermal environment. This paper proposes Standard Effective Temperature (SET*) as the evaluation index on natural ventilation in architecture. SET* has the advantage of allowing thermal comparisons between environments at any combination of the physical input variables. Based on a laboratory study with a large number of subjects, empirical functions between two comfort indices, skin temperature and skin wittedness, were developed. These functions are used in the two-node model to produce predicted values of the votes of populations exposed to the same condition as the cylinder by Gagge. It is instructive to work out SET* via two-node model and to analyze the respective influence of various constructions on the SET* by numerical simulation or tunnel test. In addition, the application of the method can be a simple design tool at preliminary design stage. The current study indicates that the limitations can be avoided in the field of evaluation with natural ventilation by PMV and adaptive model, and also be more correctable by using standard effective temperature as an evaluation index with natural ventilation in architecture. It is instructive to work out SET* via two-node model and to analyze the respective influence of various constructions on the SET* by numerical simulation or tunnel test. In addition, the application of the method can be a simple design tool at preliminary design stage.
