This paper presents a detailed energy performance study of a luxury resort hotel located in an up-and-coming tourist destination near the sea in the southern part of China. By looking at the metered energy consumption data and utility bill, the overall energy performance of the resort hotel is evaluated. Results show that the luxury resort hotel consumes twice the amount of energy when compared to an ordinary resort hotel, and triple the amount of energy when compared to a luxury commercial hotel. The luxury resort hotel and commercial hotel are compared using detailed energy break-down analysis and on-site investigations. Findings show that the waterscape system and the operation of the luxury villas in the resort hotel play very import roles for the building’s energy performance. The retrofitting of waterscape pumps and villa operations are also introduced, revealing great energy saving potential.
