The goal of this investigation was to develop the understanding of air and contaminant transport in patient wards and to provide qualified experimental data for the validation of CFD models. The paper conducted comparative experimental study on dispersion and distribution of respiratory contaminants breathed and coughed out by a patient in a full-scale single-bed ward. Experimental results showed that coughing could cause higher respiratory contaminant concentration at upper part of the ward (Height above the ground H>1.5m). Postures of the patient had little effect on the concentration distributions of contaminant at the low level of the ward, while made difference at the breathing level or higher level of the ward and significantly impacted the concentrations of contaminant at the main and auxiliary exhausts.
