Establishment of Meanline Compressor Mathematical Model with Active Blade Load Distribution Control

Centrifugal compressors play an important role in different industrial fields including transportation and energy management. Their stable operation is critical for the systems in which they are installed, thus surge protection is an essential part of their control. This paper introduces the development of a simplified one-dimensional mathematical model that is able to predict the changes in compressor characteristic map due to a novel flow injection method called Blade Load Distribution Control (BLDC). These devices are practically small orifices in the hub of the centrifugal compressor, which can inject pressurized flow preferably from the discharge of the compressor in order to stabilize the main flow of the blade passages. The base flow will deflect according to the amount of the injection, which has been investigated in the earlier part of the research. The calculation procedure is based on the Split Compression Model published previously for a different method and now it is adapted to achieve computation of BLDC system. The paper introduces the basic assumptions, the buildup of the mathematical model and presents the results that can serve later as a basis of implementation of active surge control devices. The primary aim of this paper is to show the expected effect of the BLDC injection, whether this system is worth to be implemented in centrifugal compressors.
