This paper presents a step-up switched capacitor multilevel inverter (SCMLI) containing small numbers of active switches, which will tolerate lower voltage stress. This topology allows low DC voltage to be converted into high AC voltage without DC boosting devices. The circuit’s operating states along with switching sequences are illustrated in details. Afterward, a modulating strategy called Multicarrier Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (MC-SPWM) is introduced in order to yield a 9-level output voltage waveform. Finally, necessary simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed topology and modulating strategy.
