High voltage cables are widely used and directly associated with the reliability and safety of urban power transmission. However, nowadays, the ablation defect in high voltage cable has caused trouble to power systems. This kind of defect occurs in the buffer layer (semi-conductive water-blocking tape) of the high voltage cable and is hard to be detected using conventional techniques. Therefore, this paper provides some basic researches on acoustic characteristics of the buffer layer for further exploration of acoustic detection methods. In this paper, a numerical acoustic model is established based on the porous characteristics and the buffer layer structure. The propagation characteristics of acoustic signal generated by buffer layer discharge is thus obtained and the applicative condition to adopt ultrasonic detection of buffer layer ablation.
