Based on theoretical analysis and experimental studies, this paper develops a SEA based underwater noise prediction method for ship's conception design. By performing theoretical analysis of SEA error source, an SEA based underwater noise prediction method with less modal number subsystems is presented. Study indicates that underwater noise prediction is still valid for those whose total modal number in band is great than 4 regardless of whether each subsystem's modal number in band is great than 4 or not. However, vibration prediction will cause significant error if subsystem's modal number in band is less than 4. An underwater vibration and noise radiation experiment of a ribbed cylindrical hull is carried out. Comparisons of simulation with experiment are also presented.
