The mechanism for noise and vibration caused by the interaction between a vehicle tire and the road is complicated. A method with a global perspective would be useful for managing such complicated interactions among vehicles, tires, and roads. This paper presents a method for estimating the power input to a tire due to tire-road interference, using the experimental statistical energy analysis (ESEA) method for vibration energy propagation. The input power can be estimated by using ESEA to model the tire structure and the vibration during tire rotation. Tires rotating at different speeds and with/without tread patterns experience differing power input. We use a tire testing machine with a rotating drum as the road to evaluate the power input predicted by the proposed method. We validate our method by comparing the differing power input with that of the sound pressure radiated from the tires. The proposed method would be useful for labeling tires and/or roads.
