This study investigated the evaluation of subjective responses to horizontal vibrations in the detached house caused by external vibration sources such as road traffic, railway and construction work. An experiment involving human subjects was carried out to investigate the relation between subjective responses and some evaluation metrics based on the domestic and international standardized evaluation methods. The subjective responses were measured by rating the sensational magnitude of vibration and vibration discomfort in a living space. Input stimuli in the experiment were generated from responses of single degree-of-freedom model subjected to selected ground vibration records so as to estimate building vibrations caused by external sources. It was found that the Vibration Dose Value, VDV, which considers the effect of vibration duration by the fourth power, was most appropriate among the evaluation metrics adopted in this study.
