The effect of sound absorption by a seated orchestra in the audience area was measured the audience acoustics in scale models. With a consideration of the surface areas of orchestral instruments, 1:10 scale model musicians were made, and the absorption of the models was measured in a reverberation chamber. The effect of the scale model orchestra on auditorium acoustics was investigated for different shapes of the concert hall and compared with empty stage conditions. Reverberation time was found to decrease by about 0.1 s and the sound strength was also reduced by about 1 dB. A box-type simulation model of orchestra players with a scattering coefficient of 0.6 and a transparency of 0.7 was suggested by the results of measurements taken using scale models and simulations.
