Recently, Fidell has suggested that sounds resulting in audible rattles should be assessed simply on the basis of distance. In effect, he suggests that when audible rattles are involved, annoyance is independent of number of events and can be predicted solely on the basis of the near worst case event. A number of other research studies can be used to evaluate Fidell's assertions and test his theories. In particular, attitudinal survey data from Ft. Bragg and Ft. Lewis can be used to test this theory, since loud blast sound from large weapons and demolition readily create rattles. These Attitudinal surveys were conducted in the early 80s in the vicinity of Ft. Bragg NC, and Ft. Lewis WA. The percent HA has been plotted both versus distance to the nearest large-weapon firing point and versus CDNL. The resulting linear regression fit using distance to the nearest firing point is as good as the fit using percent HA versus CDNL, thus tending to support Fidell's assertion. And just on the basis of simplicity, distance should be used and recommended in comparison to predicting or measuring CDNL.
