Multiple Utility Evaluation of Peracetic Acid for Municipal Wastewater Disinfection

To advance implementation of peracetic acid (PAA) as a wastewater disinfectant alternative for chlorine, test data were generated using wastewater from Texas and California utilities as a means of addressing remaining regulatory ambiguities associated with discharge permit requirements and to acquire the selected preliminary design criteria beneficial for possible implementation. A combination of bench, pilot and demonstration scale studies were performed for PAA application at 8 wastewater facilities that evaluated disinfection efficacy through log reduction assessments, disinfected effluent toxicity measured as whole effluent toxicity (WET) and assessment of changes in other permitted effluent discharge water quality parameters. The results demonstrated the suitability of PAA as a disinfectant alternative and the data generated from the study will aid in understanding some of the remaining uncertainties associated with the regulatory aspects of implementation discussed during two regulatory workshops.
