Miami Beach Embraces Resilient Solutions for Infrastructure Investments

Like many coastal communities, the City of Miami Beach has experienced sea level rise at a greater rate than predicted. The fight is under way to keep streets, businesses, and residents dry on sunny days. Higher tides, more frequent and prolonged flooding, and beach erosion are among the major effects that are being experienced by residents, tourists, and property owners. Miami Beach started implementing Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact recommendations by modifying City design and construction standards that address sea level rise. Design standards now account for the next 30 to 50 years of forecasted sea level rise. This is the core basis of a resilient approach to infrastructure, planning for change and adjusting should conditions warrant. With its road elevation and stormwater pumping projects, Miami Beach has become one of the first cities in the US to change its landscape in response to sea level rise.
