Changi Water Reclamation Plant: The plant of the future constructed in the now

PUB (the Singapore Public Utilities Board) own and operate the Changi Water Reclamation Plant (CWRP). The extension of the CWRP treats an average of 200,000 m~3/d (43 mgd) in an activated sludge membrane bioreactor (MBR) system in the domestic stream. A local contractor, HSL, engaged Mott MacDonald to complete the detailed design of the new extension. The design included 4D - 7D elements in BIM and is one of the most advanced BIM projects in the world today. The use of BIM extended beyond these 4D - 7D inputs into using virtual reality for operability and maintainability (and general design), and safety in design workshops, BIM to field applications and reality capture to monitor construction progress and complete "As Builts". This paper summarises the development of the project using the model environment, including lessons learned through this process.
