The results from these studies provide early evidence of the mechanisms driving pore formation and modulation in emulsion electrospun fibers. The ability to tune porosity and pore size in fibrous meshes yields promise for engineering the release of ER agonists to reduce TMJ-OA. Further work will continue to investigate the role viscosity differences between the internal and continuous phase plays on internal architecture with the aim of creating fibrous scaffolds capable of physiological release. Additionally, studies will be conducted to determine release kinetics of a synthetic ERa agonist, propylpyrazoletriol (PPT), from these tunable scaffolds and assess the corresponding effects on male and female mandibular condylar fibrochondrocyte proliferation and extracellular matrix production.
