GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT FOR ELECTRIC AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: CASE STUDY FOR TURKEY

With growing environmental concerns, the significance of sustainability increases in recent times. Applying sustainability practices in their operations becomes a necessity for organizations in order to achieve a competitive advantage, reduce costs and comply with government mandated regulations. The way of integration sustainability into supply chai ns pass es through implementing green supply chain management practices for manufacturers. In terms of reaching green supply chain goals, reverse logistics can be used as an effective means by manufacturing firms. In addition to its environmental contributions, reverse logistics practices can provide significant economic value in firm and country level. Turkey has to transpose and implement the EU waste electric and electronic equipment directive in order to become a member of EU (WEEE Directive', 2002/96/EC). In order to manage WEEE, the EU enacted the Directive. The aim of this study is to explore the cost-benefit and social benefit reflections of green supply chain management practices in Turkey under the influence of recent government mandated regulations with an emphasis on reverse logistics. The central research question in this study is: How do manufacturers perform green supply chain management practices and how is the process of adaptation to the government mandated regu lations in Turkey? In addition to the central research question the following sub questions are aimed to address in this study: What can be the influencing variables of the green supply chain management practices in Turkey? What are the expected and realized benefits of reverse logistics? In this study the literature on green supply chain management will be briefly reviewed with a special emphasis on reverse logistics. Based on the literature review a model will be built and propositions regarding green supply chain management and reverse logistics will be formulated. In the scope of this research, case study examples from Turkey will be employed to gain insights into the green supply chain management and reverse logistics practices. Based on the empirical results the developed model will be refined.
