Brushless and permanent magnetless machines have gained importance for applications requiring smooth excitation control and minimum maintenance. Brushless synchronous machine can prove to be a suitable candidate in such cases. However, such machine employs a separate exciter which reduces the overall compactness of the system. In order to make the system compact and achieve higher mechanical robustness, the exciter machine can be integrated into the main machine frame. One such machine has been recently proposed where two synchronous machines of different pole configurations are embedded in a single frame. This machine is named as synchronous machine with embedded brushless synchronous exciter (SEBSE). This is done to decouple the two machines and achieve independent control. This work deals with design techniques for SEBSE. Extensive simulations have been done on MAXWELL-2D to validate the proposed method.
