The development mode of compact cities caters to the concept of green sustainable development. With the planning status of urban cluster development, the development mode of compact urban agglomeration emerges. To improve the traffic compactness of urban agglomerations, this paper proposes a rail rapid transit trunk construction method for the development mode of the compact urban agglomeration of the great western triangle economic zone (abbreviated as GWTEZ). First, this paper comprehensively studies the area and its neighboring transportation node cities, and uses the complex network to select the central target city. Then, the research is carried out by combining the urban development potential mode with the graph theory minimum spanning tree Kruskal algorithm. In the end, the rail rapid transit trunk lines of GWTEZ are rationally constructed. The results show that the rail rapid transit trunk lines presented here conform to the compact urban agglomeration development mode.
