An Extension of a Linux UART Driver

Embedded systems commonly communicate with many peripheral devices using a low-cost serial interfaces such as UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter). On the other end, a typical microcontroller used in such systems has a small number of UART interfaces exported to a user. In this paper, we describe an extension of a Linux UART driver that supports communication with multiple peripheral devices via single UART interface. The driver is seamlessly integrated into the Linux architecture and requires minimum hardware changes.
