LOCAL TETRAGONALITY OF MARTENSITE INVESTIGATED BY EBSD

Martensitic steels are important materials known for their high strength. Martensite in steels is commonly believed to assume a tetragonal structure due to the incorporated carbon atoms. The dependence of the martensite lattice parameters on the carbon content has been previously studied in various X-ray diffraction investigations [1]. In the present paper, we describe an analysis approach for the locally resolved study of martensite tetragonality using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Compared to previous EBSD-based investigations [2, 3], we apply a projective transformation approach for quantitative EBSD pattern matching in order to study local variations of tetragonality within individual martensite grains [4].
