Forward Caching Hints to Reduce WASTE

The dominant HTML/HTTP-based web-centric means of networking application implementations have given rise to significant efforts to improve performance, predominantly through caching of web objects. Caching limitations force a common web object to refresh at pre-set time intervals, resulting in latency and data transmission inefficiencies we term Web object Access Setting Timeout Excess (WASTE). We provide an initial definition of the WASTE concept here paired with an example analysis for a small set of web sites where we highlight the relative amount of web objects and their data that are WASTE downloads when content did not change. We subsequently describe a methodology and practical implementation approach to limit WASTE that leans on principles found in Contend Information Centric and Named Data Networking (CCN/ICN/NDN). Specifically, we describe an implementation approach of transparently embedding explicit forward hinting of content details for caching purposes.
