Moment of inertia is an essential parameter that has to be identified for satisfactory control performance for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). In this paper, an on-line identification method for moment of inertia is presented, featuring high accuracy and short convergence time. A model reference adaptive system (MRAS) consists of three parts: a reference model, an adaptive model, and an adaptive law. In this paper, the practical and mathematical models of a PMSM are used as the reference and adaptive models of an MRAS, respectively. Then, an adaptive law is presented to adjust the adaptive model to approach the reference model. Simulations and a comparison of the presented method with a conventional MRAS-based method were carried out and showed that the presented method improved both accuracy and identification speed.
