One of the major problems faced by the distribution utilities with the large scale integration of solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems is the enhancement of uncertainties and variations in the overall demand profile of the utility. Such variations are the major cause of concern for the power system operators as they directly affect the stability of the grid if left unbalanced. It becomes a more challenging task for the PV integrated distribution utility to reduce the deviations from scheduled power drawl, and adds to its operational costs. In this study, we propose a methodology for optimizing the net power variations using residential appliance demand response. The switching on time of the deferrable appliances and charging/discharging of the battery energy storage system are controlled centrally so as to optimize the deviations while minimizing the deviation settlement cost of the distribution utility under frequency linked pricing system. The proposed methodology is tested by performing simulations considering the realistic case of a utility in India.
