For the purpose of studying the significance of various factors affecting the aging of composite insulator’s silicone rubber shed, 139 insulators of 33 transmission lines in a province on the southeast coast were tested by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. The samples included different voltage levels, different ageing years and different manufacturers. Assuming that the inner layer of silicone rubber is unaged rubber and the outer is aging rubber, the difference of infrared spectra between the surface layer and the inner layer is used as the index of aging evaluation. The test data are analyzed by analysis of variance. It is found that the aging is more serious with the increase of ageing years, and the influence of manufactures on ageing is more significant than that of voltage level.
