The ultra-high trees below the transmission lines can cause short-circuit faults. The segmentation of the crown below the transmission line and the extraction of the tree tip or branches are the key and premise for the tree height image monitoring device to automatically calculate the distance between the tree tip or the branch and the wire. In this paper, a tree crown bicolor model segmentation method based on RGB and HSV color features is proposed. The segmentation model of the crown in RGB and HSV color space is established. In order to accurately obtain the edge position of the tree tip or branches in the crown, a tree tip or branches extraction method based on the improved Harris corner detection algorithm is proposed. In the case study, the proposed method achieves the accurate segmentation of the crown and the accurate extraction of the tree tip or branches in the crown, and the validity and accuracy of the proposed method is verified. The research results in this paper can be used to calculate the distance between branches and wires, which lays a foundation for realizing accurate warning of ultra-high branches in tree height image monitoring of transmission lines.
