Transmission line galloping is one of the most important disasters of power grid in winter. Based on the galloping observations and loss records obtained from the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the distribution characteristics and the key meteorological factors of galloping events are analyzed. The results show that the galloping events appear in most of the plains area of central and north China, there are obvious differences in the occurrence areas of galloping in different months. For North China, the combination of temperature and precipitation is the most important meteorological affecting the occurrence of galloping, and for the central China, temperature and wind speed are the most important factors which affect the occurrence of galloping. The result of the study has an important significance in galloping prediction.
