Survey on MTC Group Authentication and Key Management for MTC in LTE Networks

Networking among machine terminals with interaction without human interventions is popularly known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) application/service or Machine-Type Communications (MTC). The major consideration for successful deployment of next generation MTC to address this challenge involves the ready-to-use cellular infrastructure-based network technologies like Long term Evolution (LTE) and future 5G. The advantages of LTE-MTC include increase battery life, reduce device cost/complexity and enhance coverage. MTC device trying to attach to LTE network have to undergo the mutual authentication and key agreement (AKA) procedure resulting massive signaling overhead. The existing literature tries to reduce this signaling overhead by grouping the MTC devices based on various criteria. This paper elaborates and compares the AKA protocols specific to MTC on LTE network.
