LIQUID-PHASE BONDING OF CARBON/CARBON AND POROUS CARBON FOR STRUCTURAL AND THERMAL MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS

Robust liquid-phase bonding techniques such as active brazing play a key role in heat exchangers, turbine engines, fuel cells and thermoelectric systems. While many industrial active braze alloys are available, the effectiveness of such alloys to bond advanced high-temperature ceramics, composites and porous materials must be experimentally evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In this contribution, some empirical findings based on extensive trials to screen promising brazes to join high-conductivity carbon foam and carbon/carbon composites will be presented. Microstructure and select engineering properties of joints will be presented to identify the most promising material combinations. The role of braze composition and joining conditions on joint microstructure, composition, micro-hardness, residual stress and joint strength will be discussed.
