Experience with Second Ammonia Converter (R-0502) Bypass at Ammonia Plant of Kaltim-1A

The R-0502 of Kaltim-1 A plant experienced 2 major problems in the last 18 years. The first problem was an internal failure of the catalyst basket in 2003. The second problem was a crack in the bottom head in 2017. During both cases, a bypass line was installed to keep plant in operation at 90% production rate. This paper provides a description of each of the problems encountered. This paper also provides a description of the operational differences that were experienced when the plant operated without the R-0502.
