In order to measure noise levels for pavement, a couple of measurement types from ISO standards can be applied such as Statistical Pass-By method (SPB method) on ISO-11819-1 and Close-Proximity method (CPX method) on ISO-11819-2. SPB method is for sampling noise from traffic on a given pavement surface with to assessing the influence of the pavement surface on traffic noise. Also CPX method is based on test tire rolling on the pavement surface with measuring microphones located close to rear tire of the test vehicle. Especially the influence of pavement surface on traffic noise can be evaluated on the basis of the measurement of CPX method. For applying CPX method to measure noise levels of certain segment of pavement surfaces, specific conditions should be met for ISO-11819-2 standards such as weather condition, surface condition, traffic condition, as well as vehicle condition. Especially ISO-11819-2 recommends a certain type of reference tire to apply the CPX method for noise measurement of pavement surfaces. The purpose of this study is to compare results of measuring noise levels between using the reference tires of CPX method on ISO-11819-2 and using the regular tires of CPX method on a test road.
