From Open Source Volunteer to Full-Time Tech Writer

"Find an open source project and start contributing" is hands-down the best career advice I ever received. In this paper, I'll briefly describe what open source software is, and talk about how I used my volunteer experience on the Apache Taverna project to become a technical writer at Facebook. I'll describe the tangible and intangible skills I gained, as well as how I got noticed when the primary communication channel was a mailing list, and no one knew who I was.
