In this paper, a new nine-level voltage source inverter for medium-voltage high-power applications is proposed. The proposed topology is a combination of the active nested neutral-point clamped inverter and the flying capacitor inverter. A carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation scheme is developed to balance the voltage of the flying capacitors using redundancy switching states. The steady state and transient performance of the proposed topology and the implemented control technique is analyzed and investigated under different modulation indices and load power factors. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller to balance flying capacitor voltages is investigated and discussed.
