We have fabricated PCM-based nanoparticles containing Ce6 and NDs and successfully demonstrated the synergistic effect of PDT and PTT for tumor therapy. Our therapeutic approach has a number of attractive features. Unlike other approaches, nanoparticle fabrication does not require chemical conjugation, so the nanoparticles can be prepared using a simple mixture of PCM, Ce6 and NDs in organic solvent. Ce6 was not released from the Ce6/ND/PCM before laser exposure and the amount and timing of the Ce6 release can be fine-tuned by the laser exposure time. These features allow side effects to be minimized and treatment time to be easily determined. In addition, the therapeutic contribution ratio of PDT and PTT can be simply changed by varying the content of Ce6 and NDs. Besides Ce6, other anti-tumoral drugs (e.g., doxorubicin) can also be entrapped in PCM-based nanoparticles as long as the drugs are soluble in organic solvent. We believe that the PCM-based nanoparticles have great potential for effective tumor therapy.
