Myocardial Extracellular Matrix Embedded with Synthetic Cardiac Stem Cells for Cardiac Regeneration

Stem cell therapy represents a promising strategy in regenerative medicine. However, live stem cells are fragile and need to be carefully preserved and processed before usage. In addition, stem cell transplantation carries certain immunogenicity and/or tumorigenicity risks. Another major limitation has to be overcome is the very low retention and engraftment rate after direct stem cell transplantation in the heart tissue. Our study will form the foundation for an innovative natural and cell-free cardiac patch based on synCSCs secretion capability and the myo ECM morphologic specialty. The hybrid cardiac patch of our approach will be tested in large animal models and readily translatable to the clinic use. The hybrid patch represents a "organ band-aid" technology that can be applied to the creation of multiple types of synthetic stem cell and extracellular matrix for various organs for different organ injury therapy.
