Induction heating is a contactless highly-efficient technology with a major social and economic impact due to its benefits in terms of performance, efficiency, safety, and control. In order to further develop this technology, cost-effective and efficient power converters are required. This paper proposes the use of a second generation of MOS-controlled thyristors in order to obtain cost-effective implementations with significantly improved performance and reliability. The proposed converter is modeled and analyzed highlighting its main benefits, and it is validated through an experimental single-ended induction heating prototype.
