Biomedical informatics from big data perspective: Expectations and challenges

Biomedical data is generated in large quantities every day not just by biomedical devices but also by hospital equipments and other resources as well as mobile devices. One of the new technologies that biomedical computing has been working on is called as “big data”. However, this large amount of data (big data) is rapidly disappearing since it is not usually used or stored for research purposes. Today, big data technology finds various application areas in research fields such as biomedical and healthcare services. Biomedical Informatics, as a subfield of biomedical research, is one of the favorite areas in where big data analyzes are frequently used. Recently, studies point out that the the enormous potential of big data and using it in biomedical research is quite important. The aim of this study is to identify the expectations and challenges in biomedical informatics in terms of big data technology by classifying data gathering, data storage, data management and data analysis. In this line, an organizational model is offered for Biomedical Informatics in terms of big data.
