Flux Leakage Calculation of the Ironless Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor for Medium and Low Speed Maglev Trains

Medium and low speed maglev trains adopt ironless permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (IPMLSM) as their propulsion system. This kind of motor can reduce the normal attractive force between the mover and the stator, and it can also eliminate the cogging force, in the meantime, the problem caused by its flux leakage has drawn people's attention. In this paper, the leakage magnetic fields around the IPMLSM are calculated using 2-D and 3-D finite element methods (FEM). The calculation results include the magnetic fields distribution of the IPMLSM, and the range of flux leakage density equal to 5Gs, which indicates the safety distance people should keep from the motor. Some suggestions on the way to reduce the flux leakage are given as well, which offers the reference for the practical application of this motor.
