High-frequency (HF) radar is a well-known technology utilized for military and civil purposes. HF ocean radar systems gain increased attention during the last decades becoming a remote-sensing network to monitor the marine weather. The systems are operated in the 3-30 MHz frequency band and due to surface wave propagation provide over-the-horizon capabilities in monitoring the ocean surface. Some of ocean radar systems apply frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology to get a range resolution, which enables them to operate with a relatively low transmit power of a few watts only. Sometimes unstable 50/60-Hz power line frequency or other time-varying noise sources can cause interference in the radar data. An idea to implement a triangle waveform in HF radar to mitigate undesirable 50/60-Hz interference and its harmonics in radar data is proposed and measurements results are presented. The measurements show an improvement in surface current mapping using such implementation.
