An integrated dual-band wireless LAN antenna for full metal chassis tablet with a sound-flow enhancement slot

This paper presents a fully integrated dual-band wireless LAN antenna for a tablet with full metallic rear cover and a predetermined sound-flow enhancement slot. For such a harsh design environment, a metallic clip is used as the antenna feeding, and the sound-flow enhancement slot serves as the main radiator. To generate two different resonant modes within the 2.4- and 5-GHz bands, the clip is offset from the slot center and kept slightly away from behind the slot as a proximity couple feed. In this way, the two desired bands can be produced with inherently good matching and broadband characteristics. The fabricated prototype integrated within a real tablet mockup exhibits decent impedance matching and satisfactory total efficiency throughout the two targeted frequency bands.
