The performance of a vertical tail equipped with a passive (Vane Vortex Generator) and an active flow control device (Vortex Generating Jet) was experimentally investigated. The main objective of this investigation is to increase the total side force of the vertical tail. To achieve this, the flow on the rudder, which is usually detached at high deflection angles, must be reattached with the help of Vortex Generators. First, a parameter study was conducted to indicate a Vane Vortex Generator configuration that provides the largest side force gain. On this basis, a parameter study for the Vortex Generating Jets was performed, in which the array of Vortex Generating Jets has the same position as the array of Vane Vortex Generators. Both separation control devices show the ability to generate longitudinal vortices that are capable to significantly delay flow separation on the rudder. Moreover, both active and passive devices can be substituted for each other.
