The Research Development of Cultural Mapping Libraries

This paper presents the development of research towards the formalization of Cultural Mapping Libraries. It defines this particular category of digital libraries that communicate culture via map interfaces, along with the need to study them. The definition of the Culture Domain of these libraries is also provided, a domain responsible for focusing and disseminating the geographical dimension of culture. Metadata and ontology schemas are discussed in the CML context, concluding their connection to the Culture Domain and to the efficiency of the CML's search mechanisms. Design and functionality are also viewed under the CML prism, where their influence by the CML complexity, mobility and different contexts is highlighted. Finally, we summarize the progress of developing our web-based CML, that is currently in the analysis phase, where specific project needs and software are defined.
