Aiming at the problem of different types of target metal materials for underwater active electromagnetic detection, according to the different electromagnetic scattering characteristics of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metals, this paper proposes a method for determining the metal material based on the change of the equivalent inductive reactance of active electromagnetic emitting coils. Then active electromagnetic detection coil is designed to detect the iron and aluminum metal objects. The test verified the relationship between the equivalent inductance of the transmitting coil and the metal material. The test results show the effectiveness of the method in distinguishing the metal material types.
