Protection system is the first defense line to ensure the safe operation of power grids, hence it is of great significance to study its reliability. Currently, the research on protection system reliability mainly focuses around misoperation and fail-to-operation, yet it does not effectively take advantage of defect data which may occur in greater probability. This paper analyzed defect data of protection devices and estimated the parameters of two-parameter Weibull distribution as well as the reliability function, failure rate function and mean time between failures. The study case shows that it could supply new ideas for reliability assessment of protection systems and reference for maintenance optimization from the point of view of defect information.
