With the development of new technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and group intelligence, autonomous systems including drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and unmanned ships have emerged. Surface unmanned boats have become an inevitable trend in the field of the shipping industry in the future. As a product of a new generation of disruptive information technology, unmanned boats are not only an important part of military unmanned combat systems, but also provide important support for upgrading the country's scientific and technological innovation capabilities. Firstly, this paper introduces the characteristics and technical development of unmanned boats, and then elaborates the key challenges such as motion control and environmental awareness that is pretty much the agenda. Finally, the development prospects and directions are reviewed.
