ANALYSIS OF MATERIAL FLOW IN A HIGH-MIX, LOW-VOLUME JOB SHOP: A CASE STUDY

This article presents a case-study analysis of a high-mix, low-volume government-operated repair and refurbish operation that operates within a job-shop environment. A brief literature review of these types of systems and the techniques used in their analysis are presented. Then, a multi-criteria methodology is discussed that can be used to analyze product usage and product flow within the facility. In addition, ordering and resupply operations are examined by illustrating a best practice approach analyzing inventory to support the operations. The case study illustrates the methods and the types of analyses that can be performed. Finally, motivations are given for future work in this area.
