Conclusions: These results establish a direct cause-effect relationship between substrate mechanical compliance, cellular biophysical characteristics, and mechano-sensing in human VICs. They also underline the relevance of local mechanical properties, in particular material stiffness, in the design of scaffolds for tissue engineered heart valve applications.
