Technology: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactoral, chronic and progressive disorder affecting over 5 million people in the USA alone. Epidemiological studies have shown that the impact of DED on quality of life is equivalent to dialysis or severe angina. The symptoms include scratchiness, inflammation, grittiness, foreign body sensation and compromised vision. There is no cure for DED, and limited FDA approved treatment options currently exist, requiring multiple drops per day that are painful to administer and can take months to work.
