The purpose of the present paper is to assess the prediction of transonic buffet on supercritical and conventional profiles by Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS), originaly proposed by Girimaji [Girimaji S.S.: ASME J. Appl. Mech. 73 (2006) 422-429], in conjunction with the GLVY [Gerolymos G.A., Lo C., Vallet I., Younis B.A.: AIAA J. 50 (2012) 2848-2864] Reynolds-stress model (RSM) for the unresolved scales. Comparison of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models with experiments on the supercritical OAT 15 [Jacquin L., Molton P., Deck S., Maury B., Soulevant D.: AIAA J 47 (2009) 1985-1994] and the conventional NACA0012 [McDevitt J.B., Okuno A.F.: Tech. paper 2485 (1985) NACA] profiles, confirm the inability of classical statistical turbulence closures to accurately predict the self-sustained shock-wave oscillations. PANS computations using a constant ration of unresolved k_u to total k turbulent kinetic energy (f_k = k_u/k), for the supercritical profile are presented and show encouraging improvement of the prediction of the Sow instability.
